Volunteer Opportunity

Alumni Mentor

Mentors are asked to build a meaningful connection with one student during the fall semester by sharing their experiences, offering guidance, and supporting the student's personal and professional development.

Mentoring may include conversations about:

• Career exploration
• Professional networking
• Leadership development
• Workplace transitions
• Goal setting
• Navigating college and career decisions
• Life after graduation
• Industry insights

No prior mentoring experience is required. Program resources and guidance will be provided throughout the semester.

Volunteer Commitment

Mentors are encouraged to participate in:

• One virtual mentor kickoff event
• Three mentor-mentee conversations during the semester
• One in-person mentorship meet-up during Red and White Week (if able)
• One virtual end-of-semester celebration

Most mentor meetings are scheduled at times that are mutually convenient for the mentor and student.

Program Timeline

• August 23: Deadline to express interest
• September 9: Student mentor selection period closes
• September 10: Alumni Mentor Virtual Kickoff
• Week of September 14: Mentor-mentee matches announced
• Week of September 28: Recommended first meeting
• Week of October 19: Recommended second meeting
• October 30: Red and White Week Mentorship Meet-Up
• Week of November 16: Recommended third meeting
• December 11: Virtual End-of-Semester Celebration

Location

Program activities include:

• Virtual meetings
• In-person meetings (optional and mutually agreed upon)
• Program-sponsored virtual and in-person events

Volunteer Support

Mentors receive:

• Program orientation and resources
• Suggested conversation topics
• Program communications and reminders
• Opportunities to engage with fellow mentors
• Support from NC State Alumni staff throughout the semester

Important Information

Students will review mentor profiles and express interest in mentors whose backgrounds, experiences, and career goals align with their own. While every effort will be made to create meaningful mentor-mentee matches, expressing interest does not guarantee a match during a given semester. If you are not matched, your information may be considered for future mentorship opportunities.

When expressing interest, you are encouraged to complete the optional profile fields. This information helps students identify mentors whose experiences and perspectives best align with their interests and goals.
